The ATO have been in consultation with the small business community to better understand how they can support small business owners who may be experiencing mental health issues.

If you are a small business owner experiencing mental health issues, there are a few options available to help. You can:

  • submit a request for hardship priority processing via your tax agent;
  • ask about setting up a payment plan (the ATO may be able to offer interest-free payment arrangements for small businesses with an activity statement debt); and
  • apply for a lodgement and payment deferral.

The ATO may also be able to release you from some or all of your debt. The ATO define serious hardship as when payment of your debt would leave you unable to provide food, accommodation, clothing, medical treatment, education or other necessities for yourself, family, or others for whom you are responsible.
