Small Business Support - Temporary Full Expensing & Instant Asset Write-Off

  • Wednesday, 05 July 2023 09:00

TEMPORARY FULL EXPENSING

Temporary full expensing (TFE) ended on 30 June 2023. Small businesses can still claim an immediate deduction for the cost of eligible assets first used or installed ready for use by 30 June 2023 in this year’s tax returns.

However, the end of TFE on 30 June 2023 means that the cost of assets that are not already being used or installed ready to use by 30 June 2023 are not eligible for an immediate deduction under TFE in small business tax returns this year.

TFE supports small businesses making capital purchases by allowing an immediate deduction for assets, rather than claiming the depreciation over a number of years. Even if you have paid a deposit or received an invoice, the asset must be installed ready to use by 30 June 2023. If the asset is not installed ready for use by the deadline, you may still be able to claim deductions under the general or simplified depreciation rules.

$20,000 INSTANT ASSET WRITE OFF

As part of the 2023–2024 Budget, the Australian Government announced it will improve cash flow and reduce compliance for small businesses by temporarily increasing the instant asset write-off threshold to $20,000, from 1 July 2023 until 30 June 2024. This measure is not yet law.

Small businesses, with aggregated turnover of less than $10 million, will be able to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets costing less than $20,000 that are first used or installed ready for use between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024.

The $20,000 threshold will apply on a per asset basis, so small businesses can instantly write off multiple assets.

Assets valued at $20,000 or more (which cannot be immediately deducted) can continue to be placed into the small business simplified depreciation pool and depreciated at 15% in the first income year and 30% each income year after that.
